Day 4 - Lessons in Jugs

Coming home from work, I was excited to see what my wine was doing, and to test the specific gravity.  I expect the jug, since it contains the same amount of yeast as the bucket, to be ready for secondary fermentation much sooner than the bucket.  I'm not really sure what "secondary fermentation" means when the primary fermentation is happening in a glass jug too.  Perhaps I'll just siphon it over to the other jug.

Anyways, looking in the landing, I find juice puddling on the floor, and splatters every where.  The jug had completely filled up with bubbles, the water in the fermentation lock was replaced with juice, and the juice was bubbling out of the cap!  Oh snap, I guess I put too much juice in the jug.  Well, I need to siphon some out to test the s.g. anyways.

Placing the jug higher than the bucket, I siphon some into the bucket, and some into a container to test the s.g.  The s.g. of the jug is below.

I also tested the s.g. of the bucket, replaced the bung and fermentation lock of the jug, and cleaned up.

Specific Gravity

  1. Jug: 1.060 (starting 1.080)
  2. Bucket: 1.084 (starting 1.091)
